Review: Puppet Kings – Very Cool & Groovy EP

Hailing from Brighton, Puppet Kings are a three piece rock n roll outfit hurling out loud riffs, singalong choruses and hell of a lot o potential! Their first outing, which will be available September 1st, Very Cool and Groovy is exactly what the name would suggest. There are a lot of bands currently out there trying to make it big with throwbacks to a more classic rock n roll sound, with so little delivering anything worthwhile. however, every now and then one band comes a long with something worth listening to. This is that band.

Let me just put it out there, this is a debut EP. Not a full album, just four songs that let you know exactly what Puppet Kings are all about. Riffs, grooves and choruses. And damn, they are good at it. The stand out track on the EP is without a doubt the first single Rich N’ White, which opens with a soundbite from none other than the President of the United States, Donald Trump! The song is a rather unflattering and satirical look at the state of the world from the point of view of a rich white guy (they’re looking at you Donald) that is so catchy and well written that it really helps to propel the album to even greater heights. As a side note, it is nice to hear one of these rock n roll throwback bands singing about modern day, real issues and not just the vast amounts of cocaine that they have probably never touched and the beautiful women they haven’t slept with. Good job guys.

What helps these songs to stand out from a lot of other music in the genre, is that I believe that these songs will translate fantastically to the live environment. I challenge you to listen to Other Side and not find that chorus in your head whilst you sit there rocking out to the best hard rock riff I have heard this year. These songs could really bring Puppet Kings to the attention of a lot of people and could really propel them to great heights in the genre.

For the record, although I am speaking very highly of this EP, its hardly Guns n Roses’ Live Like  A Suicide EP. Puppet Kings still have a lot of growing to do before they consider releasing a full album. These four songs are clearly excellent blueprints to work with and to evolve so as to help them find their way. Thats not to say that this EP is just a stepping stone to bigger things, I’m just saying that although this is good, i have no doubt in my mind that what we hear next has the potential to be much, much better!

4/5
